9. Goodwin Park

Goodwin Park was constructed in 1901 to the plans of the Olmsted Brothers firm. At first, it was called South Park, but it was soon renamed for Reverend Francis Goodwin, who was the first president of the park board under a newly adopted city charter. Goodwin Park’s main feature was a large meadow, later replaced with a golf course. Starting in 1918, Hartford’s first airmail planes landed in Goodwin Park. In 1921, two young airmen were killed while trying to land in the park. This event prompted Mayor Newton C. Brainard to construct a proper landing field in Hartford. Dedicated on June 11, 1921, Brainard Field, in Hartford’s South Meadows, was then the only municipal airport located between New York and Boston. It is now Hartford-Brainard Airport.

Turn right and head north on Hubbard Road. Turn right on South Street and then make an immediate left onto Becket Street. Drive to the church on the left side of the street.
